Despite believing Manchester City to be the ‘favourites’, former England midfielder Paul Scholes has backed Liverpool to win the Premier League this season.

Pep Guardiola’s men began their season with a 2-0 win over West Ham on Sunday, whilst Liverpool were held to a 2-2 draw with newly promoted side Fulham the day before.

Erling Haaland stole the headlines with two goals on his Premier League debut and he will be looking to carry on his goal-scoring form when City face Bournemouth at home on Saturday.

Klopp’s side will be hoping to get their first win on the board when they face Crystal Palace at home on Monday night, but have been dealt a big blow with Spanish midfielder Thiago now being out for 6 weeks.

But despite their slow start, Scholes believes the Reds could pip City to the title this season.

“They (Manchester City) are possibly favourites. But, as I said, I fancy Liverpool slightly.”

“However, you can’t write off Manchester City. They are a brilliant football team. They are changing a little bit, in transition, I think, with Haaland coming in.

“It will be interesting. Manchester City can win the Premier League, of course they can, because they are a brilliant football team.”

Despite finishing 4th in 2020/21, the Reds picked themselves up last campaign and pushed Manchester City to the final day, narrowly missing out on the title by one point.

If it wasn’t for five minutes of madness during Manchester City’s victory over Aston Villa, the Reds would have been crowned Premier League Champions for the second time.

The two sides have reigned supreme in England for the last five years, and this season is expected to be no different.
