journalist-reveals-steve-ballmer-ownership-‘stance’-after-liverpool-takeover-links

US businessman Steve Ballmer has been linked with Liverpool – and a new report appears to have shed some light on the situation.

A number of wealthy potential investors have been linked with Liverpool since The Athletic reported that FSG had placed the club up for sale.

FSG then released a statement, saying they ‘would consider’ new investment into the club.

But Liverpool chairman and FSG co-founder, Tom Werner, has told the Boston Globe that the owners are ‘exploring a sale’.

He said: “We’re exploring a sale, but there’s no urgency, no time frame for us, and as far as I’m concerned, it’s business as usual.

“One outcome could be our continued stewardship for quite a while.”

Steve Ballmer linked with Liverpool takeover

The latest link to a potential takeover bid for Liverpool is that of Steve Ballmer, an American business magnate who was the Microsoft chief executive between 2000 and 2014.

He is currently the owner of NBA side Los Angeles Clippers. The Clippers have achieved little success in their NBA history, never winning a league or Conference title. They did, however, enter the Western Conference finals in the 2020/21 season.

Ballmer was also rumoured to be in the running to take over the Reds, and with a net worth of $86 billion, as per Bloomberg, could well have been able to meet the club’s reported £4 billion asking price.

However, there were few genuine links between the American and Liverpool – and his previous stance on ownership could be telling.

Steve Ballmer ownership ‘stance’ amid Liverpool links

According to a report by the Los Angeles Times, Ballmer is understood to have no interest in expanding his current sporting portfolio, which would appear to rule out any bid for Liverpool.

LA Times reporter Sam Farmer tweeted: “I do know that when I sat down with Ballmer recently and asked if he would be interested in buying any other sports franchises, he said no.

“And it was a definitive no. He said he already spends enough time focused on the Clippers, and now building a new arena for them. Said he’s not interested in devoting time to another team.”

Farmer does state, however, that he cannot ‘claim to know the veracity’ of any rumours that Ballmer is in for the Reds, which may potentially mean there is more to this story to come.
