Fans are amazed Trent Alexander-Arnold escaped punishment after bringing down Ryan Sessegnon in the first half of Liverpool’s clash with Tottenham Hotspur.

The Reds took an early lead through Mohamed Salah’s neat finish, but Spurs grew into the game.

In the 18th minute, Ivan Perisic played a lovely ball through to Sessegnon who managed to get ahead of Alexander-Arnold.

Knowing Sessengon was in a great position to put the ball across the box, Alexander-Arnold put his arm into his opponent’s back.

Spurs fans inside the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium appealed for a penalty as Sessegnon went to ground, but referee Andy Madley saw nothing wrong with the challenge. VAR also checked the incident and agreed with Madley’s on-field decision.

It’s seen rival supporters point to an incident involving Manchester City full-back Joao Cancelo on Saturday.

Cancelo was sent off for a similar challenge in the box when he bundled Harry Wilson over. The Portugal international received his marching orders, which allowed Andreas Pereira to equalise from the spot.

Fans have reacted to the incident and they think Alexander-Arnold is lucky to still be on the pitch.

One person commented: “How do we go from a straight red to that in less than a day? Someone answer that please.”

Another said: “Cancelo got sent off for the same foul yesterday.”

A third tweeted: “I don’t know what makes these two challenges different.”

While someone put: “The consistency of referees in this country is appalling.”
