A reporter wanted to let Donny van de Beek know that Manchester United fans still have “a lot of love and support” for him during a wholesome post-match interview on Tuesday.

The 25-year-old midfielder, who spent the latter part of last season on loan at Everton, will be hoping to break into United’s first team in the coming months under former Ajax boss Erik ten Hag.

And things are finally looking positive for the Dutchman following a slow start to life at Old Trafford.

And it didn’t long for the midfielder to make an impact. Just three minutes after his arrival, he showed great composure to cut the ball back to Marcus Rashford, who tapped in from close range.

It was a clever assist from the Netherlands international on his third appearance in pre-season.

Van de Beek continued to link up play as fans revelled in his performance during Tuesday’s 3-1 pre-season win in Melbourne.

And after the full-time whistle, the Dutchman was asked about United’s fan base and the support they’ve given him through difficult times at Old Trafford.

The smile on his face says everything you need to know.

Moments later, the 28-year-old was asked about Erik ten Hag being his manager again. Van de Beek spent three years playing under Ten Hag at Ajax before leaving to join Manchester United in a £35 million deal.

Earlier this month, Van de Beek said he was “really happy to be back” at United after an injury-plagued loan spell at Everton. He now wants to play as many minutes as possible.

“[United] is a massive club with a lot of fans and, to wear the shirt, it’s always a special feeling,” he told United’s official channel in Bangkok. “For me as well, I’m really happy to be back.”

When asked about his ambitions for the new campaign, he added: “I think making as many minutes personally, as I can.

“I think we need to improve as a team. If you’re looking at last season, we have a lot of things to improve and, if we work on that now, then we’ll see where we end up. We will fight for everything.”
