Diego Costa was sent off for headbutting Ben Mee in Saturday’s Premier League match between Brentford and Wolves.

The incident occurred deep into second-half injury time with the match level at 1-1.

Earlier in the game, Mee had given Brentford the lead shortly after the half-time interval with a stunning volley.

But Wolves immediately hit back through Ruben Neves, who scored just two minutes after Mee’s spectacular opener.

In the fourth minute of added time at the end of the second half, Costa clashed with Mee while jostling on the edge of the Brentford area.

Mee collapsed to the floor after appearing to be headbutted by the former Chelsea striker, who joined Wolves on a free transfer last month.

Referee Bobby Madley missed the incident but was instructed to consult the pitchside monitor by VAR.

Replays of the incident showed Costa and Mee accidentally clashing heads before the Wolves striker appeared to make a deliberate second attempt to connect with the Brentford defender.

After reviewing the footage, Madley brandished a red card to Costa for violent conduct.

Despite having the play the final new minutes with 10 men, Wolves held on to secure a 1-1 draw away from home.
