Chelsea fans have been busy digging through the archives after AC Milan sealed a place in the Champions League quarter-finals.
On Wednesday night, Milan took a narrow 1-0 lead to the Tottenham Hotspur stadium looking to reach the last eight for the first time since 2012.
After what was a cagey affair, Spurs were knocked out of Europe’s elite competition after a 0-0 draw, with Milan advancing with a 1-0 aggregate victory.
On the back of the Serie A side’s victory, Chelsea fans have come up with a theory that they are in line to win the competition.
A fan took to social media and wrote: “Milan are in the UCL QF for the first time since 2011/12…they beat an English side in the RO16 both times….
“Chelsea made 7+ signings in 2011/12 & lost the first RO16 leg before qualifying for the QF.
“Chelsea made 7+ signings & lost the first RO16 leg before qualifying for the QF this season.”
All three tweets are linked to the fact that they think history will repeat itself this year and Graham Potter’s men will be the ones lifting the trophy aloft in Istanbul in June.
Whilst it may seem like they are rather clutching at straws, we have seen stranger things happen in the world of football.
After Tuesday night’s match, Chelsea boss Potter said: “To win a game to go into the last eight of the Champions League you’d have to say it’s up there with wins and evenings in my career.
“This evening the players and the supporters were tremendous – we had to be against a team that were doing so well, 10 games on the bounce winning. I think over the two legs we deserved to go through. We played a good game in Dortmund but we didn’t score, today we did.”
Can Chelsea go all the way to the final and win? Only time will tell.
